Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)

Welding rods (electrodes) are the consumable materials used in shielded metal arc welding (SMAW). A welding rod is a coated metal wire made of a material similar in composition to the metal being welded. Choosing the right welding rod for each project requires consideration of many factors.

Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), commonly known as manual arc welding, is a widely used welding process in our factory, primarily dedicated to the fabrication and assembly of large structural components. It relies on the electric arc between a flux-coated electrode and the workpiece to melt the base metal and electrode core, with the flux decomposing to form a protective gas and slag, ensuring stable welding quality.

Applicable Materials

Suitable for thick plates, castings, forgings, and welded structures with large cross-sections—ideal for large structural components such as steel frames, pressure vessel shells, bridge segments, and heavy machinery bases.

Core Advantages for Large Structural Components

Strong Adaptability: No strict requirements on workpiece size/shape or welding site; can be operated in outdoor, on-site, or confined spaces (critical for large structures that are difficult to move).
Thick Plate Welding Capability: Excels at welding plates ≥6mm (with multi-pass welding, can handle plates over 50mm).
Simple Equipment & Low Cost: Only requires welding machine, electrodes, and basic tools; no need for shielding gas or complex auxiliary systems.
Reliable Joint Performance: Welds feature high tensile strength and impact resistance, meeting the structural integrity requirements of large load-bearing components.
